Apartment Ownership Act to be amended enabling registration of unregistered condominium properties

Providing relief to residents languishing many years as a result of not being able to obtain deeds for their housing units up to now owing to non-registration of lands

in the Land Registry, the cabinet approval has been granted to a proposal submitted by the Minister of Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities, Hon Wimal Weerawansa   to amend the Apartment Ownership (Special Provisions) Act enabling the registration of such property.

Accordingly, the relevant amendment bill is now being drafted by the Legal Draftsman’s Department and once the process is completed, opportunity will be accorded to register more than 100 properties constructed by the National Housing Commissioner’s Department, National Housing Development Authority and certain private property developers.

The Chairman of the Condominium Management Authority Mr.Kapila Gamage, attorney at law told “Sahadhipthya” that Tsunami condominium properties constructed under Tsunami rehabilitation -2004, too can be registered under the new legislation.
